The Gator Nation Band, known for its high-energy Cajun shows, will play during the Summer Concerts in the Park Series on Sunday.
Brookings’ free “Summer Concerts in the Park” series at Azalea Park continues at 1 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 21, with the Gator Nation Band, known for its handclapping, feet-stomping Cajun, zydeco and New Orleans R&B music.
The band is led by vocalist and washboard player Willard Blackwell, who began singing at the age of 13 and went on to form several critically acclaimed Northern California bands.
With the same survival instinct as its namesake, Gator Nation continues to adapt itself to its audiences, always with something fresh yet true to its calling. That calling is to represent the music of South Louisiana in all its forms: Cajun, Zydeco and New Orleans style. The result is a remarkable show with so much variety and depth that at the end of the show, the Gator Nation Band leaves you happy and hollerin’ “Gimme Some Mo”!
Learn more about the band and watch videos at gatornationband.com
The free music series — supported by presenting sponsors Rogue Credit Union, Travel Curry Coast and Elk Valley Casino — attracts 800 to 1,200 music fans per concert. The sound system is provided by sound engineer and local resident Ed Ajimine.
The Rotary Club of Brookings-Harbor operates the Snack Shack for all the events, providing food such as hot dogs, pizza and burgers, and sodas and water. In case of bad weather, the concerts will move indoors to the Gibney Center at Brookings-Harbor High School or Azalea Middle School cafeteria, 505 Pacific Ave.
The Pacific Coast Trolley will provide free rides from the lower parking field on North Bank Chetco River Road to the park’s bandshell. The pickup times for the Sunday concerts are 12-1 p.m. and 3-4 p.m.
• Aug. 21, Sunday, 1 p.m.: Gator Nation, Cajun and zydeco music.
• Sept. 4, Sunday, 1 p.m.: McKayla Marie Band, country.
Information and videos about the bands can be found at the American Music Festival’s Facebook page at facebook.com/AmericanMusicFestivalBrookingsOregon
Additional community sponsors include Wild Rivers Motorlodge, Elk Valley Rancheria, Hearing Health Care, Nature’s Coastal Holiday, Peggy O’Connor of MORE Realty, Brookings Signs and Graphics, Oregon Community Foundation and Three Rivers Foundation.
